Is torture OK?

Bev's blog raises an important issue:

"Because today is also a day Christians in America need to speak up. We need to demand to know if the horrific conduct at Gitmo recently reported by the Associated Press is true. Did American women sexually humiliate Muslim men to gain information? If it is true, we need to abhor and condemn it. We need to be alarmed that our fellow countrymen and women would stoop so low as to shame grown men into being afraid to pray."

Here is the response I posted at her site:

"Hi, this is my first visit to your blog.

I am not ready to condemn Gitmo. I'm sure we all agree there was a major problem at Abu Gharib. I find it hard to draw the line on prisoner interrogation techniques.

Remember these people are most likely hardened terrorists, willing to die to destroy us. It is quite difficult to get them to give out valuable information, let alone abandon their "death cult" philosophy. The information they have could save untold lives.

You may be right, but you haven't convinced me yet. One of the things that make me hesitate to condemn is the Bible clearly depicts Hell as a place of eternal torture for those who have rejected his (update God's) authority. I am deadly serious, Christ is the ultimate torturer. I grant that we are not God and cannot take this authority up on our own; but I believe it is possible that God has called Bush and America to this war and He accepts the terrible methods we must use to gain the victory. (Or maybe not.)"

I'll update this if she responds.

Iraq Election Complete

Well we still don't know who the winners are, but the Iraqis proved their desire for democracy. I am impressed by the bravery of ordinary citizens in both Iraq and Afghanistan. They all risked their lives to choose their leaders. I have pledged to pray for the new president of Iraq, but he won't be known for a few days yet. Anyway, congratulations Iraq. Welcome to the Alliance of Democratic Nations!

USSPN Weekly State Prayer Focus for ARKANSAS (January 30 - February 5, 2005)

I am forwarding our USSPN Weekly State Prayer Focus for ARKANSAS (January 30 - February 5, 2005). Dr. Jay D. Morse, our Apostolic Coordinator for Arkansas (prayacop@aol.com), submitted the following focus and history.

Blessings,

Chuck D. Pierce

****************

Prayer Focus for the State of Arkansas

“2005 is the year of ‘Redemptive Harvesting’, as we declare that the things which the thief has stolen, killed, or destroyed will be restored in miraculous harvest because of the redemptive work of God upon our state.”

—Dr. Jay Morse, USSPN Apostolic Coordinator, Arkansas

“There is such a war over this state, to hold the state and the Church in deception. God says, ‘It’s going to break this year. It will either break this year, or it will be known that the Spirit of God has left these boundaries.’ It’s not going to be any in-between this year…God says, ‘This is a year where My people must break out of their old cycles.’ ” — Chuck Pierce, Global Harvest Ministries Deliverance Conference, Arkansas, December 2004

The Lord has issued Arkansas a precious promise of deliverance and redemption in 2005, one that also carries a solemn warning should we neglect to embrace it. This is not surprising as deliverance is one of Arkansas’ redemptive gifts. As you agree with us over the issues below, please do so from the perspective of deliverance. Declare with us that in 2005, Arkansas and the Church within her will break free from every binding and deceptive structure and cycle that has been allowed to operate within her borders, and enter fully into God’s new season, beginning a new cycle of righteousness.

Please agree with us over the following words that also came forth at the conference in December 2004:

  • “(It’s a) year of deliverance, a year of breaking out…breaking old cycles…destroying cycles you have warred with…violent praise…God’s people will move into the opportunity for their future…they will plunder the enemy’s camp. God says, ‘I want you to come forth with a sound this year that will cause the enemy to let go and give you back what you need for your future.’ “ —Pray for God’s people to break old cycles and move into the opportunity for their future, to receive the new sound of violent praise that they might plunder the enemy’s camp and recover all things he has taken from them.
  • “The only way we keep it (sin) hidden is because of occult… it’s (to) this occult structure that God is saying, ‘Rise up, Church, you are a supernatural people. Break out from under this, receive My Spirit, and rip off that thing that is keeping My glory from invading your land.’ It’s time for that to be broken over us.” —Pray that God’s people will not hesitate to expose, deal with, and be delivered from anything in their lives individually and corporately that hinders God’s glory from flowing through them. Note that this occult structure over the Church in Arkansas includes the following: witchcraft-divination-receiving information illegally (revelation from demonic sources)-secret societies-the evil eye.
  • “God wants a sweeping move of healing (to) break out in this particular state. (Note: healing is another of Arkansas’ redemptive gifts.) To do that, the dark angels are watching after every evil covenant or every false covenant that has been made in secret societies in this particular land. They have actually propagated the lies that have gone out from this particular territory, into the nation and even to other parts of the world, and to them, God has a message. He is saying, ‘I am ready to mobilize My angelic forces into Arkansas so the dark angels can be blinded over My people’…God is ready to dispatch angelic forces into this territory that will cause the darkness that’s linked with false covenants that have been made…for those dark angels to flee from Arkansas and all of the deception that is being propagated by them to let go of the people of this land.” —Pray for the release of these angelic hosts. Declare that God’s people will have the spirit of wisdom and revelation to facilitate the angelic work and warfare as they battle the deception propagated in and from this state, and release the outbreak of healing.
  • “God says, ‘I am ready to deliver My people. I am ready to remove every dark force that’s holding My people out of total freedom. I’m ready to break those things in your bloodline that allow any familial spirit to impart revelation to you. I’m ready to cause anything that’s linked with your finances to be detached from Mammon so you will prosper thirty, sixty, or one hundred fold, instead of just going through the world’s way of increase.’ “ —Pray for the structure of Mammon to be exposed to the Church. Pray that God’s people would disconnect from its system and operate by the principles of Kingdom economics.
  • “God’s people must shift into a governmental gifting order to overthrow the strategic government that is set against us. It takes a government to overthrow a government.” —Pray for revelation among God’s people of His governmental order. Arkansas has a natural call to release the apostolic, but the false apostolic has been so strong here that the true apostolic God desires to birth in this region has not been able to come forward. The counterfeit apostolic structure has created a counterfeit “church” which has stolen revelation from the true Church and veiled her with deception. It has also been manifest in the political system. The iniquity of the counterfeit apostolic has produced a stronghold of fatherlessness which, in turn, has enabled a spirit of lawlessness to rule in our state, particularly in the Church. It is imperative that God’s people war against these false structures in 2005.

- Pray for the destruction of the false apostolic veil thrown over this state, and call forth an angelic host to war against it both in the Church government and civil government.

- Pray for revelation and reception of the true apostles and apostolic structures.

- Pray for true spiritual fathering, and the release of trans-generational worship, warfare, and discipleship that the youth of Arkansas will capture the call of intercession for their generation.

- Pray for the true Church to reclaim the revelation of covenantal relationships that has been stolen by the counterfeit church, as well as the understanding of her corporate identity as a nation.

It has been noted that Arkansas is shaped much like the Hebrew character Hei ×” ,which is one of the numbers in this Hebraic year of 5765. Hei depicts a window lattice and the roar of the wind through it. In this year of 5765, we believe this prophetically speaks of Arkansas as a window releasing a violent roar that will affect the entire nation.

It is our continual prayer and declaration that we will see all of Arkansas saved and transformed as God’s Kingdom is established in our state. Towards that end, in 2005 we are endeavoring to network 1000 intercessors who are committed to pray for Arkansas and the nation. We also believe God to give us 35 churches/ministries this year who will network together for prayer gatherings and declare that this state will be touched and affected by the moving of the Holy Spirit.

Continue to pray over God’s promises for Arkansas from the 50 State Tour:

  1. “I’m going to restore the foundations.”

- We are calling for the restoration of foundations of revival that broke in Arkansas in days past, and for the release of our prodigals. It’s a year of household deliverance.

  1. “I am going to realign and restore Arkansas with its God-ordained purpose.”

- We are praying for the wells of Arkansas’ redemptive gifts of healing, deliverance, and refuge to flow from her womb to her people and throughout the nation

  1. “I’m going to expose and dislodge the serpent.”

- We are decreeing the overthrow of the demonic, false apostolic structure

  1. “It’s time for Arkansas to blossom.”

- We are declaring Isaiah 35 over the state.

Pray for the USSPN Leadership at the national and state level: C. Peter Wagner, Senior Apostle; Chuck Pierce, National Apostle; the National Apostolic Council; Dr. Jay D. and LaNee’ Morse, Arkansas Apostolic Coordinators; Lisa Lyons, Arkansas Mobilizing Coordinator.

General State History

From evidence left in mounds and bluffs, including pottery and stone implements, we know that people have been living in the region that is now Arkansas for thousands of years. The ancestors of the Indians were first to inhabit the region. The abundant wildlife and fertile soil made the area a wonderful home for these people, who gradually developed from primitive hunter-gatherers living in caves to much more sophisticated farmers living in large permanent villages. As the eastern lands were settled, more Indians moved to sparsely inhabited Arkansas. The Indians who lived here included the Folsom people, Bluff Dwellers, Mound Builders, Caddos, Quapaws, Osage, Choctaw and Cherokee.

In 1541, the Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto was the first European to set foot in Arkansas. He led an unsuccessful, yearlong expedition for gold. One hundred and thirty-one years later, two Frenchmen named Marquette and Joliet visited Arkansas briefly. In 1682, at the mouth of the Mississippi, LaSalle claimed the Mississippi Valley for France, but was later assassinated by two of his companions. In 1686, Henri De Tonti set out from Fort St. Louis on the Illinois River to meet LaSalle at the mouth of the Mississippi. After he failed to locate LaSalle, De Tonti, the "Father of Arkansas,” established Arkansas Post, the first European settlement in Arkansas.

Over the next hundred years, development of the region was sluggish as the number of settlers slowly increased. In 1762, the entire Louisiana Territory was ceded to Spain, and Spanish governors offered free land and no taxes to encourage settlers to inhabit the area. In 1799, there were approximately 386 white people living in Arkansas. In 1803, the Louisiana Purchase was acquired by the United States, and, in 1819, Arkansas was organized as a territory. Its northern, eastern and southern borders were the same as they are now, but to the west, some of what is now Oklahoma was included. In the same year the Arkansas Gazette, once considered the oldest newspaper west of the Mississippi, was founded by William E. Woodruff. Two years later in 1821, the territorial capital was moved from Arkansas Post to Little Rock.

By 1836, the Arkansas Territory had the 60,000 residents required to become a state, and after writing an acceptable constitution, was declared the 25th state in the United States. The new state enjoyed a thirty-year period of prosperity, and by 1860 had a population of 435,000, 25 percent of whom were slaves. The majority of the residents were planters who lived in the rich bottomlands of the east and southeastern portion of the state and farmers who lived in the central and northern hills. A much smaller number of residents were lawyers, doctors, merchants, missionaries and teachers.

Arkansas was drawn into the Civil War in May of 1861 by its decision to secede from the Union. Troops were mustered and civilians devoted their energy and resources to providing food, clothing, weapons, and horses for the soldiers. Two major battles, Pea Ridge and Prairie Grove, were fought in Arkansas. In 1863, the Confederate government moved to Washington in the southwestern corner of our state; and in 1864 the Union government was established in Little Rock. After the Civil War ended in 1865, the era called Reconstruction began, during which dramatic changes were made in the South. The Democrats returned to power in 1874, the same year our present constitution was adopted. Even as early as 1875, Arkansas was billed as the "Land of Opportunity" when an active campaign was launched outside the state to attract new residents to Arkansas.

By 1900, the population had more than doubled to 1.3 million. Automobiles grew in popularity and in 1921, the first auto, gas, and oil taxes were levied to finance construction of paved roads and highways. The discovery of oil and natural gas reserves in the state provided cheap and plentiful energy for years. The growing use of farm and machinery led to the consolidation of many family-run farms into larger farming corporations.

Arkansans learned in 1904 that rice could successfully be grown here, and it is now one of our most profitable crops. The livestock and dairy industries have also gained prominence in the last 90 years. A post World War II drive to industrialize the state was successful in effecting a more favorable balance of industrial and agricultural production. Firms in Arkansas now manufacture a wide range of items, including aluminum products, aircraft components, communications equipment, cosmetics, clothing, and pulp and paper products.

In 500 years, Arkansas has grown from vast wilderness to a thriving state with a population of millions. Advancements in farming, lumbering, manufacturing, tourism and government have gained Arkansas a viable place in the international market. It is home to the Wal-Mart Corporation, the world’s largest retailer, as well as multi-million/billion dollar companies such as Tyson, Beverly Enterprises, and Arkansas Best.

Weekly State Prayer Focus for ARIZONA (Jan 23-29, 2005)

I am forwarding our USSPN Weekly State Prayer Focus for ARIZONA(Jan 23-29, 2005).Cheryl Sacks, our Apostolic State Coordinator for Arizona and member of our National Apostolic Council, submitted the following focus and state history. As you will read below, Dutch and I just finished a regional gathering in that state, and the Spirit of God is really moving them forward into His purposed destiny.

ARIZONA STATE PRAYER FOCUS

Key Prophecies for the State of Arizona
On January 21 and 22 Dutch Sheets and Chuck Pierce came to the Phoenix area for a Southwest Regional Conference (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Nevada) called Pressing through the Gates of Change. The conference was appropriately named as we heard it prophesied that great change is coming in the next three years. Dutch and Chuck sensed the change in the atmosphere since the 50 State Tour meeting in January 2003, acknowledging that great breakthrough has come to the region. Dutch declared that this year God will launch the state of Arizona and the surrounding region into what He has destined. God will bring us to a new level of wholeness which will make us conspicuous. Arizona will be a voice of reform to restore foundational issues and will be a leader in certain areas for the rest of the nation. God wants to create a model of wisdom and revelation, and many will come to Phoenix to see what God has done.

It was prophesied that the landscape in the Body of Christ will look different at the end of the year. There will be increased momentum for the youth revival at high schools and universities. This is the year of release for that which has died; the wind of the Spirit will blow the dust off that which has been shelved. We will now move into a season of outpouring. A new passion for ministry will hit the region. Miracles will take place. Revelation will change the atmosphere so that the unsaved will open to the gospel!
Key Initiatives for Arizona in Early 2005

The establishment of 24-hour worship and prayer within our state will be pursued. God has put this on the hearts of many and it has been a goal for some time.

Prayer Points for Breakthrough and Revival:

1. Pray that Arizona will continue to take spiritual ground and will not fall prey to the deceptions of the enemy.

2. Pray for the establishment of 24 hour worship and prayer. Pray God will initiate strong connectivity among churches and ministries and pour out the Moravian fire that has been prophesied over prayer groups and worship teams.

3. Pray for open doors to the prophetic and a connecting of the prophetic with the administrative/pastoral. Pray that true apostles will rise up and be recognized.

4. Pray that the door to revelation would open wide (Jeremiah 33:3) and the fullness of God will be released within the Church of Arizona.

5. Pray that the liberal agenda that is attempting to take root in this state will be uprooted and replaced by a Biblical agenda, and that unrighteousness in the legislative and judicial branches of government will be exposed and replaced.

6. Pray that the mantle for governmental prayer will be energized by an increased anointing, understanding and passion among intercessors to pray for state and national officials.

7. Pray for healing and racial reconciliation.

8. Many believe that Arizona has a redemptive gift in healing and this has also been a pattern in the state’s history. Pray in agreement with us that healing miracles, as well as other signs and wonders will be released to the Arizona Church.

9. Arizona has a rich history of entrepreneurs and creative businesses. In fact, the state motto is “God enriches.” Pray for an increase of marketplace ministries that will be involved in both outreach and in giving their income for Kingdom purposes.

10. Pray against the strongholds of pride, unbelief, disunity, competition, independence, idolatry, greed, addiction, apathy, religious spirits, and the fear of man which have dominated Arizonans throughout history and still influence the population today.

11. Pray for secure southern borders and the apprehending of any terrorist trying to enter our state.

GENERAL STATE HISTORY

The motto of Arizona is “Ditat Deus” which means “God enriches” and our Creator has certainly endowed this state with a history of creative entrepreneurs, a heritage of sacrificial Christian leadership, sources of wealth in mineral deposits, and breathtaking displays of beauty found in natural wonders such as the Grand Canyon.

The first known inhabitants of the land were the Sinagua (“without water,” Spanish) in the north and the Hohokam (“The people who have gone away,” Hopi) in the Central part of the State. The Hohokam were ingenious people who discovered how to harness the water of the Gila and Salt Rivers through irrigation to water their fields and grow a variety of crops. They were knowledgeable astronomers, skilled jewelry makers, and the first entrepreneurs, traveling even as far as the Pacific Ocean to trade their handicrafts with other tribes. Their belief system was filled with mythological stories about receiving power from various animals and birds through dreams, and they also worshipped three main gods through magical songs and ritual dances. One god was Siuuhu who was believed to have created mankind a second time after the original people were destroyed by a great flood which covered the earth. Both the Hohokam and the Sinagua mysteriously disappeared around 1400 A.D.

In the 1500’s, Spanish explorers arrived, many of whom had been lured by legends about seven cities of gold and the expectation of sudden wealth. Not all of the explorers were opportunists though; some were Christians who had miraculous healing gifts. One was Alonzo del Castillo Maldonado. “At sunset he pronounced a blessing over the sick, and all the Christians united in a prayer to God … on the following morning there was not a sick person among them.” (Farish, 1915, p. 2)

The next to arrive in the 1600’s were the Franciscans, Dominicans and Jesuits, who were motivated by missionary zeal. The first three Franciscans came to the resistant Hopi Indians in northeastern Arizona. When Friar Francisco de Porras healed a blind boy, hundreds of Hopis were converted to Christianity in a short time. Porras became the first martyr in Arizona after eating food poisoned by angry Hopi shamens.

Probably the most famous of the Jesuits was Father Eusebio Francisco Kino. Known as the Great Apostle to the Pima Indians, Father Kino made his first trip to what is now Arizona in 1691. He established missions around Tucson, but also made itinerant trips to preach and teach. In a memorial service, Father Kino was eulogized with the following words: “He prayed much, and was considered without vice … He never had more than two coarse shirts, because he gave everything as alms to the Indians.” (Faulk, 1970, p. 23)

It should be remembered that during this time Arizona was still part of Mexico under the control of the Spanish Empire. When Mexico won its independence from Spain, the Mexican Congress decreed on Dec. 20, 1827, that all foreign missionaries be expelled. So, this ended the missionary endeavors of the various Spanish Catholic orders. The United States acquired a portion of what is now Arizona under the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the remainder of the land through the Gadsden Purchase in 1853.

During the 1800’s, violence against Arizonan settlers from warring Apaches (meaning “man fight”) started to increase. Some feel this was due to the betrayal, torture and murder of their greatest chief, Mangus Colorado. (He was promised he would receive humane treatment if he surrendered.) Others feel that the loss of missions and the lack of Indian conversions was a factor. Naturally, the encroachment of settlers – either Spanish or other Anglos – on Indian land was an issue as it disrupted their ability to hunt or farm and so limited their food sources. But, the history of Anglo - Indian relationships in Arizona is complex. Some tribes were peaceful and maintained good relationships with settlers. But some, like the Apache were more warlike, and fought not only Anglos, but also other tribes. Historically, there were a number of betrayals and broken treaties. In short, there was much innocent blood, both Anglo and Indian, shed on Arizona soil.

Not many are aware that the Civil War actually had a part to play in the formation of Arizona. A battle of the war was fought at Picacho Peak, a site located between Phoenix and Tucson, on April 15, 1862. The Tucson area was largely made up of settlers from the south, who were naturally sympathetic to the Confederate cause while the areas farther north consisted of settlers from the east coast who were largely pro-Union. The Tucson settlers tried to persuade Congress to create a Confederate Territory of Arizona with Tucson as the capital. But in the 1860’s, large quantities of gold were discovered in the north near where the present city of Prescott is located. In Washington, D.C., it was decided that the Union should secure its claims to Arizona and its mineral wealth. Congress quickly passed a bill, called the Organic Act, which divided New Mexico in half and created a Territory of Arizona from its western half. One of prominent lobbyists for this bill was Charles D. Poston who became known as the “Father of Arizona” for his work in making Arizona a separate territory. He became the Superintendent of Indian Affairs for Arizona and is also considered the “Founder of Yuma.”

The Organic Act legislation was signed into law by President Lincoln and John N. Goodwin, a Union sympathizer from Maine, became Arizona’s first territorial governor. Goodwin rejected Tucson as a logical choice for the capital and headed toward the area that was to become Prescott. As Arizona’s first territorial capital, Prescott was named after historian William Hickling Prescott who wrote a book about Mexican history and the Aztecs. The Territorial Secretary of State, Richard C. McCormick, erroneously believed that the ancient Indian ruins in the area were proof that Aztec Indian civilizations originated there before they went to Mexico.

This fascination with the Aztec culture became part of the first Masonic lodge in Prescott which named itself the Atzlan Lodge. Aztlan was a mythical site where the Devil appeared to the Aztecs in the representation of an idol. Masonry and the other secret societies were very popular in the western towns of Arizona. Much of the settlers’ social life revolved around lodge activities and many members were prominent civic and political leaders. In addition to the other groups, a different type of secret society, the Ku Klux Klan, gained a foothold in Phoenix. In the 1920’s there were 300 Klan members in Phoenix. Among these were newspaper editors, law enforcement officers, a Superior Court judge, company managers, and legislators. From its initial success in Phoenix, the Klan branched out to smaller communities in Arizona.

Fortunately, the early Protestants were shining lights in the midst of this darkness. The first Protestant missionaries came to Arizona in 1868. Not surprisingly, they found the people of Arizona – mainly miners, cowboys, soldiers, merchants and railroad workers – to be quite resistant to the Gospel. But these persistent and longsuffering preachers continued to sow into rocky soil and watched their congregations gradually increase. One notable example in Phoenix was the First Church of Christ congregation which grew from 20 members in 1887 to 3,000 members in the 1920’s. (This was 10% of the city’s population at the time). Another memorable work was that of the Congregationalists in Prescott who reached out to the Chinese in their community and taught them English using the Bible. One of these students, known as Charlie Wann, who returned to China as a believer, started a chain of department stores and with his income established several chapels, built a Christian hospital, initiated Sunday School programs and formed a Home Missionary society. He held daily church services in his home and in each of the stores resulting in the conversion of many.

In 1889, the territorial capital was moved permanently to Phoenix, a place named for the mythological bird which rose up out of the ashes. And in a similar way, Phoenix arose from the ruins of the Hohokam. While on an excursion in 1867, Jack Swilling, a prospector and former Confederate army officer who fought in the Picacho Peak battle, saw before him the expansive Salt River Valley and discovered the ruins of prehistoric Indians canals. Swilling, a resourceful man with the innovative spirit of an entrepreneur, suddenly had the idea to re-dig the ancient canals and divert water from the Salt River to irrigate land for farming. He soon organized the Swilling Irrigation Canal Company and moved into the valley. With this new access to water, many settlers moved into the area. By 1875, Phoenix was a thriving community of 16 saloons, four dance halls, a brewery, a jail, a lithograph, two banks, and a few stores. In 1882, land developer, Clark A. Churchill, incorporated a new company, the Arizona Canal Company to increase the water supply. “The Arizona Canal was unique. It was not built upon the old Hohokam canal system, but upon soil that had been previously unplowed.” (Winters, 2000)

Precious little happened in Arizona without a struggle and the territory’s admission to Statehood was no exception. Many petitions for admission were largely ignored for about twenty years. Then in January 1910, Congress authorized the Arizona territory to hold a constitutional convention for the purpose of drafting a state constitution. This new constitution passed the Congress, but President Taft vetoed it because it contained a provision allowing the recall of judges. The majority of Arizonans favored this provision as they resented the “idea that there is to be an exclusive class that shall be granted certain privileges and immunities.” (Wagoner, 1970, p. 480) But in a general election, Arizonans voted to amend the constitution in accordance with the President’s wishes. Finally, on February 14, 1912, Arizona was admitted as the 48th State of the Union. Humorously, voters reinserted the recall of judges back into their constitution on November 5, 1912.

Statehood helped to draw many new pioneers to the area as did the construction of Roosevelt Dam which increased the water supply. During this time, there was considerable growth in the mining areas such as Globe, Jerome and Bisbee as well as those towns located along railroads such as Winslow and Yuma. After World War II there was another significant increase in population as many veterans who had been stationed in Arizona returned after the war. This tremendous population growth has continued to this day with Phoenix being the 6th largest city in the nation. Every day, the population of Arizona grows by 425 people. Many of the new residents are from other nations. According to the 2000 Census, the Asian/Pacific Islander population is Arizona’s fastest growing racial group, but there has also been an 88 percent rate of growth in the Hispanic population over the past decade.

Answering Objection 2: Don't assume the church was founded on the work or the apostles and prophet's

Let's deal with Robert Bowman's second objection.

"Paul states that the church has "been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets" (Eph. 2:20) and that Christ's mystery concerning the church was "revealed to His holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit" (3:5 ). These statements indicate that the role of apostles and prophets was fulfilled in the first century."
This objection is based on a common but mistaken interpretation of EPH 2:19-20:
19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.
How is the church "built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets"? Here are two popular assumptions:
  1. The church's foundation has been built on the message of the apostles and prophets; the complete canon.
  2. This foundation has been built on the work of the apostles and prophets; ie the total output of their life and ministry.
We always complete the foundation before we build upon it and the Ephesians have already been built onto the "foundation of the apostles and prophets". Yet, the work and message of the apostles and prophets was still growing. Paul had likely five or ten more years of ministry left and had not finished his missionary journeys or written the Pastoral Epistles. The Book of Revelation (dated ~95 AD) won't arrive for perhaps 30 years after Ephesians(~60AD); that's an entire generation! Therefore these two popular assumptions must be wrong.

(The NIV Study Bible suggests the "foundation of the apostles and prophets" refers only to their early work. That means apostles' and prophets' roles continued a generation after laying the foundation. This actually helps my argument. But as I will show, this early foundation was not built upon work, but message of the gospel, what Paul calls "the mystery of Christ".)

I agree with Bowman that the key to understanding "the foundation of the apostles and prophets" is Eph 3:4-6.
4 In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets. 6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.
To Bowman, this indicates the apostles and prophets finished their role in the First Century. I'm sorry, I don't see it. But what I do see is Paul explaining exactly what the "foundation" of the Church is.

Here is what I see: the foundation of the Church is the revelation (received and promoted by the apostles and prophets) that the Jews and Gentiles are united into one body by the Gospel. The gospel reveals, not just "Christ crucified" but also that Jews and Gentiles, separated by the Law of Moses, are now united in Christ. This foundation was completed by 60AD but the apostles and prophets continued in a new role.

What was this new role? Paul shows us in Eph 3:7-9
7 I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God's grace given me through the working of his power. 8 Although I am less than the least of all God's people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, 9 and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.

Paul, is both servant and administrator of this gospel, this mystery of Christ. The apostles and prophets unique role was to lay the foundation and their second role was to lead in building upon that foundation. I believe that every apostle and prophet throughout the ages would speak with one voice affirming their role is to build upon the Church's one foundation. The role of revealing the foundation is complete, but the lead role of building upon it still remains for today's apostles and prophets.

Answering Objection 1: Don't assume "equipping the saints" = writing the bible.

Let's deal with Robert Bowman's first objection.

"The offices of apostle and prophet would naturally cease in the church once their role in "equipping the saints" was completed; that is, once the New Testament canon was completed."
I hear this argument a lot. It is based on false assumptions that the main role of the first century apostles and prophets was to complete the bible.
  • You have to assume that every apostle and every prophet were involved in completing the bible. But there were many apostles and prophets that have no connection with completing the bible. Agabus was an important prophet, respected by Luke and Paul, but the Bible and Church history say nothing about his role in completing the bible. Peter's brother, Andrew, was a major Apostle, yet the Bible and Church history are silent concerning his role in completing the canon.
  • You have to assume there is a secret division in the middle of the sentence between apostles and prophets on the one hand and evangelists, pastors and teachers on the others. This division's not in the text, but must be assumed because today we clearly do accept evangelists, pastors and teachers; but reject apostles and prophets.
  • You have to assume that there is a fundamental difference in the way these two groups equip the saints. Evangelists equip by evangelizing or training others to evangelize. Pastors equip by pastoring. Teachers equip by teaching. But all Apostles and Prophets can do is complete the canon? Don't assume that their leadership can be replaced by the Bible + evangelists, pastors and teachers. Most and of the prophet's words and deeds are not recorded in the canon. Apostles likewise did much more than complete the canon; like deciding important doctrinal issues, appointing leaders in the church, and doing signs and wonders.
Robert Bowman gives us no Bible verses or Church history to support these assumptions. Until he or like-minded apologists can support these assumptions or supply us the basis of their secret knowledge, this objection is disqualified.

ps. This sounds to me like the division warned about in 1CO 12:21.
"The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don't need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don't need you!"

Objections to the Five-Fold ministry

Robert Bowman has written an article in Apologetics Index called "The Faulty Foundation of the Five-Fold Ministry". Here are his main objections:

1. Apostles and prophets are no longer needed because we have the Bible.

"However, it is the "building up" of the church (Eph 4:12) which must continue until the church is mature, not all five of the offices listed in verse 11 ... The offices of apostle and prophet would naturally cease in the church once their role in "equipping the saints" was completed; that is, once the New Testament canon was completed."... "To claim that the church today needs visions and revelations through modern apostles and prophets of Christ is to deny the sufficiency of the Bible (2 Tim. 3:16)"
2. Apostles and prophets are no longer needed becasue the Church's foundation is complete.
3. The Apostles must be eyewitness to the risen Christ.
"The New Testament is particularly clear about the temporary role of the apostles, since they were chosen to give eyewitness testimony of the risen Christ (Acts 1:21-26 ; 5:32 ; Luke 1:1-4 ; 1 Cor. 9:1 )."
Here is his conclusion:
"The teachers of the "five-fold ministry," in seeking to "restore" a foundation which has never been moved, are actually laying a false foundation which will not support the building up of the body of Christ."
Next post will answer these objections.

Explaining the Five-Fold Ministry

One of the major distinctions of the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) is the controversial 5-fold ministry. The basic point is that God wants today's churches to be led by a team of God appointed apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers. Of course most churches don't have apostles and prophets, so a major emphasis of the NAR is to restore these church offices. The Bible covers this 5-fold ministry topic in Ephesians 4:11-13 (I'll put this is an outline form to you can study it carefully.)

  • 11 It was he who gave
    • some to be apostles,
    • some to be prophets,
    • some to be evangelists
    • and some to be pastors
    • and teachers
  • 12 to prepare Gods people
    • for works of service,
    • so that the body of Christ may be built up,
  • 13 until we all reach unity
    • in the faith
    • and the knowledge of the son of God
  • and become mature,
    • attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
In summary: God created these 5 ministries to help his people become unified and mature.

The NAR assumes that we still need all five ministries today to attain the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Many people assume that we don't need apostles and prophets today; that we can reach maturity without them. In my opinion, God's standard of maturity is much higher than we commonly suppose. Here's a riff based on Paul McCartney's song "Silly Love Songs"
Some people say the church is full of loving Christians
I look around me
and I see it isn't so

Some people say the church is full of loving Christians
I look around me
and I see it isn't so

Some people say the church is full of loving Christians
So what's wrong with us
I'd like to know

Next I'll cover the objections to the five fold ministry.
